The Buffalo News Obits: KENNETH M. REDING Kenneth M. Reding, a dairy farmer for 60 years, died Monday (March 23, 1998) in his Lawtons home. He was 75. Reding was a member of Upstate Milk Co-op, Collins Center Volunteer Fire Department and Randolph Lodge, Loyal Order of Moose. Survivors include his wife, the former Betty Phillips; a son, Faron of Lawtons; a brother, Leon of Collins; and three grandchildren. The Buffalo News Obits: Franklin Goddard Jr Franklin Goddard Jr., 72, of Collins Center, a laborer at O-AT-KA Milk Products Cooperative for more than 40 years when it was located in Collins Center, died Wednesday (April 15, 1998) in Bertrand Chaffee Hospital, Springville, after a long illness. Goddard, a resident of Collins Center, was a member of the American Legion and Collins Center United Methodist Church He is survived by his wife, the former June E. Bulman; three daughters, Sharon Rogers of Collins, Susan Goddard-Barry of Sarasota, Fla., and Sandra of Gowanda; two sons, Richard of Irving and Douglas of Sarasota; two brothers, Randall of Collins Center and Ivan of Cottage; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. SWARTZ, TAUGHT IN SILVER CREEK FOR 40 YEARS Ethel T. Swartz, 90, of Collins, a retired teacher in Silver Creek schools, died Sunday (April 19, 1998) in Gowanda Nursing Home after a long illness. Born Ethel Tingue in Collins Center, she graduated from South Dayton High School and Fredonia Normal School. She received her master's degree from Buffalo State College After teaching in Conewango Valley for two years, she taught mathematics to fifth-graders in Silver Creek schools for 40 years. She and her husband, Fred, also operated a large fruit farm and grape vineyard in Hanover Center for many years. She was a member and former officer of Rebekah and a member of Chapter 404, Order of the Eastern Star, in Silver Creek. She also was a member of the Silver Creek Art Club and collected china and cookbooks. Her husband died in 1984. Survivors include two brothers, Stanley Tingue of Gowanda and George Tingue of Girard, Pa. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Mentley Funeral Home, 105 E. Main St., Gowanda. The Buffalo News TOWN OF COLLINS FIRE CLAIMS LIFE OF WOMAN An elderly woman died in a house fire early today on East Becker Road in the Town of Collins, sheriff's deputies reported. The identity of the victim was being withheld, and an investigation into the cause was under way, deputies said. VanNote, 72, a former member of the Collins Town Board and a former Collins fire chief, died Sunday (Aug. 9, 1998) in Westfield Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Born in North Collins, he served in the merchant marine during World War II A mechanic, he operated Burke Garage in Collins until 1973, then joined the state Department of Transportation. Later, he was an inspector for the state Department of Environmental Conservation. He retired in 1993. In addition to serving on the Collins Town Board, he was chairman of the town water commissioners and a member of the Collins Republican Committee. A member of the Collins Volunteer Fire Department for 40 years, he was a line officer and served two terms as fire chief. He attended Trinity United Church of Christ and served on the church board of trustees for many years. He and Ellen Burke were married in 1950. After his retirement, they moved from Collins to their summer lakefront cottage in Westfield. They spent winters in North Carolina. In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Michele of Durham, N.C.; six brothers, Wilford, Wayne and Merle, all of Gowanda, Harold of Hamburg, Melvin of Eden and Carl of Harrison, Mich.; and a sister, Zelda Asquith of Angola. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Mentley Funeral Home, 105 E. Main St., Gowanda. The Buffalo News CASEY P. CORNELL - Sept. 19, 1998 Services for Casey P. Cornell, 18, of Gowanda, who was killed in an automobile accident Saturday (Sept. 19, 1998), will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Schindler Funeral Home, 44 Center St., Gowanda. Interment will be in Collins Center Cemetery. Cornell fell out of his stalled car as a friend was pushing it. The vehicle rolled backward off a gravel road north of Point Peter Road in Persia, and he was pinned under the door. Cornell worked installing kitchen cabinets at Del Con Manufacturing Inc. in Springville. He attended Gowanda Central High School. Survivors include his parents, Kenneth and Leona of Gowanda; a brother, Cory; his paternal grandparents, Lester of Hamburg and Shirley Dash of Gowanda; and his maternal grandmother, Phyllis Remington of Butler, Pa.
