CHARLES R. TARBOX, RETIRED POSTMASTER

Graveside services for Charles R. Tarbox, 80, retired postmaster of Gowanda, a businessman and a founding member of the Village of Gowanda Planning Board, will be held 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Collins Center Cemetery, Route 39, in Collins Center.

Tarbox was an amateur athlete who played baseball and hockey and later in his life, golf. He was a charter member of the Gowanda Country Club, where he died Saturday (June 17, 1995) after being stricken on the golf course.

Born in North Collins, he was a 1931 graduate of North Collins High School and attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Both in high school and college Tarbox was involved in athletics. He was a member of the 1930 and 1931 North Collins High School baseball teams that won consecutive county championships.

At the university he was a catcher on the baseball team and a goalie for the hockey team. Tarbox also played in The Buffalo Evening News-sponsored Lake Shore League in 1936.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as a troop transport commander. Recalled during the Korean War, Tarbox was commissioned as an officer in army intelligence units and rose to the rank of captain. In between his military service, and afterward Tarbox became involved in business. He worked for the railroad briefly before joining Household Finance as a loan officer. He went on to co-found the Johnson-Tarbox Insurance firm and later went into business on his own. In 1958, he sold his real estate and insurance business and began Tasco Real Estate and Development.

Through that firm, he helped build homes in the Gowanda area, shopping plazas and put together real estate development deals throughout the East Coast. He was temporarily appointed postmaster of Gowanda in 1962 and received his permanent appointment from President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1963.

As his responsibilities as postmaster grew, he spent less and less time working in his business. A member of the National Association of Postmasters of the United States, Tarbox retired from the post office in 1989.

Tarbox was a charter member of the Village of Gowanda Planning Board and a life member of the Gowanda American Legion. He served as a past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Gowanda and was a life member of the Solvenian Club. Tarbox was a member of the Gowanda branch of the Loyal Order of the Moose and maintained membership in the University of Michigan Alumni Club of Buffalo.

He won numerous golf tournaments, most recently the 1991 Director's Cup Tournament at Gowanda Country Club. He scored a hole-in-one at the Gowanda club in 1993.

Surviving are his wife, the former Kathleen Bowman; a daughter, Susan J.

Minnella of Maryland Heights, Mo.; two sisters, Pearl Townsend of Deland, Fla., and Margorie Manuel of Angola; and a brother, Glenn R. of Phoenix.
